How to Consume Cannabis: Methods, Onset Times, and Beginner Tips

Cannabis can be consumed in many different ways — smoked, vaped, eaten, swallowed, rubbed on, or held under the tongue. Each method has different onset times, durations, and intensities, and they all suit different occasions. This guide walks through every legal consumption method available at ZenZest, what each is good for, and how to start safely.

Flower (smoking)

Smoking dried cannabis flower is the oldest and most familiar method. Flower is sold by weight (typically 3.5 g 'eighths' or 1 g singles) and rolled into joints, packed into pipes or bongs, or used in pre-rolls.

  • Onset: 1–5 minutes
  • Peak: 15–30 minutes
  • Duration: 1–3 hours
  • Best for: experienced users, social settings, quick mood shifts

Pre-rolls

Pre-rolls are joints rolled at the dispensary — sometimes with single-strain flower, sometimes with infused concentrates (called 'infused pre-rolls' or 'diamonds + rosin pre-rolls'). They're the easiest format for someone who doesn't want to roll their own. We carry singles, multi-packs, and infused options.

Vapes (vape pens and oil)

Vape pens heat cannabis oil to vapor temperature without burning it, producing a smoother, less smell-heavy experience than flower. We carry distillate pens (high THC, very smooth), live resin and live rosin pens (more flavor and terpenes), and disposables.

  • Onset: 1–5 minutes
  • Peak: 15–30 minutes
  • Duration: 1–3 hours
  • Best for: discreet sessions, on-the-go, less throat irritation than smoke

Edibles

Edibles are cannabis-infused food or drink products — gummies, chocolates, baked goods, beverages, mints. New York State law caps single-serving doses at 10 mg THC and total packages at 100 mg. Edibles are absorbed through the digestive system, which means they take much longer to kick in but last much longer.

  • Onset: 30–90 min (sometimes longer on a full stomach)
  • Peak: 1–3 hours
  • Duration: 4–8 hours, sometimes more
  • Best for: longer experiences, no smoking, precise dosing

Tinctures

Tinctures are cannabis-infused liquid drops, typically alcohol or oil-based, designed to be held under the tongue (sublingual) for 30–60 seconds before swallowing. Holding sublingually speeds the onset; swallowing slows it down.

  • Onset: 15–45 min sublingually; 30–90 min if swallowed
  • Duration: 2–6 hours
  • Best for: precise dosing, no smoke, faster onset than edibles

Concentrates (dabs, live rosin, hash)

Concentrates — live rosin, hash rosin, badder, wax — are highly concentrated extracts of the cannabis plant. They're vaporized (usually with a dab rig or e-rig) and inhaled. Concentrates are powerful (often 70–90 % THC) and we generally don't recommend them for beginners.

  • Onset: 1–3 minutes
  • Duration: 1–3 hours
  • Best for: experienced users, high tolerance, intense flavor and effect

Topicals (balms, lotions, transdermals)

Topicals are applied to the skin. Most don't produce intoxicating effects because cannabinoids don't cross from skin into the bloodstream in meaningful amounts. They're used for localized relief — sore muscles, joints, skin conditions — rather than for a 'high.' Transdermal patches are the exception: those are designed to enter the bloodstream and will produce intoxicating effects.

Onset and duration at a glance

Dosing for beginners

If you haven't used cannabis recently, treat yourself like a new user. Tolerance fades faster than most people expect — a few months off and your old dose will feel much stronger.

  • Flower / vape: 1–2 small puffs, wait 15 minutes before more
  • Edibles: 2.5 mg THC first time. Yes — half of a standard 5 mg dose. Wait two hours
  • Tinctures: 2.5–5 mg held under the tongue for 30+ seconds
  • Concentrates: wait until you're comfortable with flower
· FAQ ·

Common questions about consumption methods.

How long do edibles take to kick in?
Most edibles begin to take effect in 30–90 minutes and peak around 1–3 hours after consumption. A full stomach slows the onset; an empty stomach speeds it up. Always wait at least two hours before considering a second dose.
Is vaping safer than smoking?
Vaping legal, lab-tested cannabis oil at proper temperatures produces fewer combustion byproducts than smoking. We only carry products that have passed full lab testing — purity, potency, and pesticide-free.
What's the difference between live resin and live rosin?
Live resin is extracted from fresh-frozen flower using a solvent (usually butane). Live rosin is extracted using only ice, water, and pressure — solventless. Live rosin generally costs more but is considered the cleanest extraction available.
Can I mix consumption methods?
You can, but combinations are stronger than either method alone. If you've taken an edible, don't smoke more on top until you know how the edible feels. The combined effect can sneak up.
How long does a vape cart last?
A 1 g vape cart contains roughly 100–200 inhales depending on your draw length. Casual users often get 4–6 weeks from one cart.
