Before you walk in: what you need

• Valid government-issued photo ID: showing you are 21+. Driver's license, passport, military ID, or NY State non-driver ID all work. Out-of-state IDs are fine.
• Cash or debit: most dispensaries can't accept credit cards because of federal banking rules. ZenZest accepts cash and a few debit-style options on-site.
• Nothing else: you don't need a medical card to shop adult-use. Adult-use is the same as 'recreational' under the MRTA.

Step 1 — ID check at the door

A door host will scan or visually verify your ID before you walk into the retail floor. This is required by the New York Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). The host is not logging your purchase history or selling your info — they're confirming you are 21+ and the ID is real.

You may also see a sign listing the daily purchase limit. New York adults can buy up to three ounces of flower (or 24 grams of concentrate) per day. In practice almost nobody comes close to that ceiling.

Step 2 — meeting your budtender

Once you're on the floor, a budtender will check in. This is the most important person in the room for first-time shoppers. Their job is to translate what you want — the experience, not the product — into a recommendation. Tell them:

• Your experience level: first-time, returning after a long break, regular user.
• What you want from the experience: better sleep, calmer evening, social mood, focus, pain relief, etc.
• Format preference (if any): smokable flower vs. edible vs. vape — or 'whatever you'd recommend for someone like me.'
• Your timeline: do you want it for tonight, the weekend, daily wellness?

Step 3 — picking your product

You'll see flower jars (open them to smell — at most legal dispensaries this is encouraged), pre-packaged eighths and grams, edibles in branded boxes, vape carts, and concentrate jars. Every product on a NY-licensed shelf has been independently lab-tested by an OCM-approved laboratory and carries a printed Certificate of Analysis (COA) batch ID.

Don't chase the highest THC number. Most first-time shoppers feel better starting with 18–22 % flower or a 2.5–5 mg edible rather than the 30 %+ headline product. Higher THC isn't 'better' — it's just more.

Step 4 — paying & the taxes

At the register the budtender (or a separate cashier) will run your order. New York cannabis taxes look different from regular retail taxes:

• 9% state cannabis excise tax (on the retail price).
• 4% local cannabis tax (3% county, 1% city/town).
• No NY sales tax (the cannabis-specific taxes replace it).
• Distributor-level THC potency tax (already folded into the shelf price you see — you don't pay this separately).

Tipping budtenders is appreciated but not expected — the NY tipping culture for cannabis still being established. If they helped you find the right thing, a couple of dollars is genuinely meaningful to them.

Step 5 — leaving the store (the rules)

• Sealed in a child-resistant bag: your purchase will be put into an opaque, tamper-evident exit bag. Don't open it before you leave.
• Keep the receipt: if you're stopped, it's proof of legal purchase.
• Don't open it in the car: in NY, an open cannabis container in the passenger compartment can be treated like an open alcohol container — keep it sealed in the trunk on the drive home.
• Don't consume in public: you can smoke cannabis in NY in most places you can legally smoke a cigarette, but inside the dispensary, on its property, and on most school/park/transit-stop grounds it remains prohibited.

Questions our budtenders wish you'd ask

• "What does this batch actually feel like?" Strain names are unreliable; ask about the specific jar.
• "Is this product fresh?" Look for a packaged-on date within the last 4–6 months for flower.
• "What's a smaller-dose version of this for someone new?" Almost every flower has a 2.5–5 mg edible alternative.
• "What time of day do you usually pair this with?" Translates the experience to a real moment.
• "What do you carry that I'd buy if I came back tomorrow?" Honest budtenders have a short list of personal favorites.
